Dual Language Immersion
Welcome to Alamosa Elementary’s Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program!
Alamosa Park Elementary School, part of the Vista Unified School District, offers a Spanish Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program for students in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 5th grade. This program follows a 90/10 one-way immersion model, where 90% of instruction is delivered in Spanish and 10% in English during the early grades. As students progress, the proportion of English instruction gradually increases, aiming for a balanced 50/50 instruction in both languages by the 5th grade.
The primary objectives of the DLI program are to develop bilingualism and biliteracy, achieve high academic performance, and foster cross-cultural understanding among students. Participation in this program provides a pathway for students to earn the California State Seal of Biliteracy upon high school graduation, recognizing their proficiency in both English and Spanish.
For the 2024-2025 school year, Alamosa Park expanded its DLI program to include 5th grade, completing the TK-5 continuum. This expansion allows students to continue their bilingual education seamlessly through elementary school.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: How long does it take to become fluent in both languages?
A: Fluency varies, but most students achieve strong bilingual proficiency by 5th grade, with continued growth in middle and high school.
Q: What if we do not speak Spanish at home?
A: No problem! The program is designed to support English-speaking families, with strategies and resources to reinforce learning.
Q: Are DLI students prepared for standardized tests?
A: Yes. Research shows that by 5th grade, DLI students often outperform their monolingual peers on standardized tests in English.
Expanded Benefits of Dual Language Immersion
1. Bilingualism and Biliteracy
Students in the DLI program achieve fluency in both English and Spanish, mastering the ability to read, write, speak, and understand both languages. This bilingual proficiency not only prepares them for success in a multilingual world but also opens doors to global career opportunities, enhances travel experiences, and allows for meaningful connections with diverse communities. By learning two languages, students gain access to a broader range of literature, media, and cultural experiences.
2. Academic Achievement
Research consistently shows that DLI students excel academically. By learning content in two languages, they often outperform their peers in English-only programs on standardized tests, particularly in reading and math. The process of learning in two languages reinforces understanding, deepens comprehension, and fosters critical analysis. This dual-language approach also equips students with robust study skills and a stronger ability to transfer knowledge across subjects and languages.
3. Cultural Competence
DLI students develop a profound appreciation for cultural diversity. Through exposure to traditions, histories, and perspectives from Spanish-speaking and English-speaking cultures, they build empathy, respect, and collaborative skills. This cultural competence not only prepares them to interact effectively in multicultural settings but also instills a lifelong value for inclusivity and understanding. The program nurtures globally minded citizens who are better equipped to thrive in our interconnected world.
4. Cognitive Skills
Learning and using two languages enhance brain function in remarkable ways. DLI students show improvements in memory, attention, and multitasking, as well as superior problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Bilingualism has also been linked to delaying cognitive decline in older adults, giving these students a lifelong cognitive advantage. Furthermore, students who navigate between two linguistic systems develop greater flexibility and creativity in thinking, skills that are invaluable in academic and professional settings.

Our History: A Legacy of Excellence
Alamosa Elementary began its DLI journey in 2020, inspired by a commitment to creating a globally minded learning community. Starting with a single kindergarten cohort and a 1st grade cohort, the program has grown year by year, offering students a seamless TK-5 pathway toward bilingualism and biliteracy.
Today, we serve 40% of the total student enrollment in grades TK-5 and have become a cornerstone for families seeking a high-quality, research-based dual language education in VUSD. Our program is aligned with California state standards, guided by best practices in language immersion, and supported by dedicated teachers and staff who bring the curriculum to life in two languages.
